Remember when I asked that question about the Peeping Tom on your discussion
site?
What I had in mind then last year was to learn if any of the Irvingomaniacs
visiting
your website had read the novel like I had read it. There was no response, so I
kept
quiet about it, thinking I was a little too eager to find critical views of
American
( and world-wide) dealing with democracy in Irving's sexy subtleties.
Do you remember the fragmental mail I wrote just before I left our home for
Scandinavia last year? I wanted to tell you again what I thought I had detected
in
The Fourth Hand, thinking Irving used his saucy sex scenes only to convey some
deeper thoughts to the few who were able to con/receive his subtle messages. You
didn't seem to understand then, and so I felt insecure about explaining how I
had
meant it, didn't want to press it upon you.
Now I see you are ripe for it, and you'll get a full broadside of Elke now: What
I
wanted to say is that I see in this novel more than just another
amusing, saucy, absurd story of my favourite author. This novel is not just about
a
fourth hand. It is also about a fourth pillar of power in democracy : Even the
ancient Greek (where the whole bag of tricks was started) knew how to use it
although they did not have today's technology: When politics seemed to go a bit
lopsided they asked the oracle to take over and their bosses knew how to handle
the
oracle. Today it's the media.
I think Irving wanted to tell us that today we are all suffering from the
Peeping
Tom syndrome - and that's why they can handle us so well, while we are cuddled
up in
our recliners, sipping our cola and beer and crunching our potato chips while
World
War III enters our living rooms.
You may use this for your site if you like but please put it into a proper
English.
Elke.
